Avatar Grove

Avatar Grove features massive red cedars with huge twisted and contorted burls. These large trees are found in large numbers throughout the stand including one that’s been dubbed “Canada’s Gnarliest Tree”.

“Avatar Grove” is in the Port Renfrew Region located at the southwest corner of Vancouver Island. These trees are over 500+ years old, some as old as 1000 with a circumference of 40+ feet. There are two parts to this park. The upper grove, which features the “Gnarliest Tree” is a must-see. The lower grove has more larger trees to see, a little easier to reach and if you keep walking through the trail will end up at Upper Gordon River, a large stoney river.

Beautiful fern draped creeks with moss covered rocks and small waterfalls meander through the woods along their way to the Gordon River. The forest provides habitat for Roosevelt elk, Pilliated woodpeckers, cougar, bears, wolves, and more.

Avatar Grove isn’t marked by road and can be tricky to find. Please see the map below which outlines the drive from Port Renfrew to the Grove.
